The Alaskan Board of Protective Service Accreditation (ABPSA)

 

Mission Overview:

 

To establish professional standards for the following: protective service personnel, curriculum requirements exceeding the industry standard and the certification of training programs into professional and/or academic accreditation. 

 

Purpose:

 

It is the purpose of The Alaskan Board of Protective Service Accreditation (ABPSA) to advise and guide private and government services on all matters related to protective services and public safety issues in the state, including but not limited to developing recommendations regarding capital budget requests related to fire/EMS, law enforcement and private contractors developing strategies to enhance the safe and effective use of private and public resources.

 

The (ABPSA) was initially formed in 2017 to share information and best practices statewide among Occupational training institutions and their leaders.  The committee is designed to collaborate and harmonize the efforts of State and local agencies, groups, individuals, and training programs representing law enforcement, emergency medical services, and fire service centered about up to date risk management practices and industry standards

                 

The council may adopt regulations for the administration including establishing minimum training and performance standards for certification of fire services personnel; establish minimum fire training curriculum requirements for certification of training programs that are designed to enable trainees to meet these standards; govern the procedure for certification of fire services training programs that meet the minimum curriculum requirements; govern the procedure for certification of individuals who satisfy the minimum training and performance standards; govern the procedure for revocation of the certificate of a person or program; consult and cooperate with municipalities, agencies of the state, other governmental agencies, universities, colleges, and other institutions concerning the development of fire services training schools and programs offered in the state; employ an administrator and other persons necessary to carry out its duties and charge and collect fees determined by the council to be necessary.

 

Through the cooperative efforts of Public Safety, Fire & EMS personnel, and Veterans currently serving or retired, the committee can identify a shared direction for the improvement of protective services practices and training in the State of Alaska.
